Apple’s September 9 Event Could Change the iPhone Story Completely — iPhone 18 Pro, Dark Cherry, a Foldable iPhone and a New Release Strategy
September has always belonged to Apple.
For years, the formula has felt almost predictable. The invitation arrives. The speculation explodes. Apple takes the stage. A new generation of iPhone appears. Pre-orders open. Then millions of devices begin moving across the world.
But September 2026 feels different.
Apple has officially called its September 9 event “Surprise and shine.” And if the extraordinary volume of reports, leaks and supply-chain information appearing ahead of the keynote is even partially accurate, Apple may be preparing much more than another annual iPhone upgrade.
This could be the year Apple changes the shape of the iPhone.
Literally.
A long-rumoured foldable iPhone could finally appear. The iPhone 18 Pro family is expected to move to a new generation of performance and camera technology. A dramatic Dark Cherry finish may replace the attention-grabbing colors of the previous generation. And perhaps most importantly, Apple may abandon its traditional strategy of launching the complete flagship family together.
Some iPhone 18 variants may not arrive until 2027.
Welcome to Surprise and Shine.
September 9: The Countdown Has Started
Apple's special event takes place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time and 9:00 p.m. in the UAE.
Apple has confirmed that the event can be watched through Apple.com and the Apple TV app, with Apple Developer information also pointing viewers toward YouTube Live.
What Apple has not confirmed is exactly what will be revealed.
That is where things become interesting.
Reports currently point toward an unusually premium-heavy launch featuring the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple's first foldable iPhone, updated Apple Watch models and potentially new AirPods.
And noticeably absent from many of those predictions?
The regular iPhone 18.
Where Is the Regular iPhone 18?
This may become one of the biggest changes to Apple's iPhone strategy in years.
Multiple reports suggest Apple could split the iPhone 18 generation into two launch windows rather than unveiling everything together.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and potentially other models could move into early 2027.
Why?
Supply-chain pressure appears to be playing an important role.
The smartphone industry continues to deal with rising component costs and constraints in areas including memory and manufacturing capacity. Supply-chain reporting has also suggested that at least one major Apple-related product schedule has moved into the first quarter of 2027.
Rather than forcing every new device through the same production window, Apple may be prioritising its highest-value models first and spreading the wider iPhone generation across two release periods.
For distributors, retailers and high-volume technology buyers, this matters.
A split launch can create significantly different availability patterns between models, regions, storage capacities and colors. The product everybody wants may not necessarily be the product everybody can immediately get.
And that makes early sourcing relationships increasingly important.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max: Evolution Under the Surface
Visually, the iPhone 18 Pro series may not represent Apple's most radical redesign.
Technically, however, the changes could be much more meaningful.
Reports suggest the upcoming Pro models could use Apple's new A20 Pro processor built on a 2nm manufacturing process, potentially delivering another jump in performance and power efficiency.
Apple is also rumoured to be working on reducing the visual footprint of Dynamic Island by moving additional Face ID technology underneath the display.
Then there is the camera.
One of the more fascinating rumours involves a variable-aperture 48MP main camera, potentially exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Unlike a conventional fixed aperture, a variable system can physically alter how much light reaches the sensor, giving the camera greater control in different shooting environments.
The front-facing camera is also rumoured to increase from 18MP to approximately 24MP.
None of those specifications are official yet.
But taken together, they suggest Apple may be concentrating less on dramatic external redesign and more on the technologies users interact with every single day: processing, photography, battery efficiency and display experience.
And Then There Is Dark Cherry
Sometimes a phone sells because of what is inside it.
Sometimes people want it because of one photograph.
This year, that photograph might be Dark Cherry.
One of the most talked-about iPhone 18 Pro rumors is Apple's possible move toward a rich, deep reddish-burgundy finish reportedly called Dark Cherry.
Recent leaked footage has reportedly shown an iPhone 18 Pro Max demonstration unit in the Dark Cherry finish alongside an iPhone 18 Pro in a blue shade. Other leaks have repeatedly pointed toward Dark Cherry and Sky Blue as likely Pro colors, although reports remain divided over whether Apple's neutral option will ultimately be Silver, Black or Dark Gray.
The leaked Dark Cherry finish looks particularly significant because Apple increasingly uses color to visually identify each Pro generation.
If previous generations had their defining shades, Dark Cherry could become the visual signature of the iPhone 18 Pro generation.
Deep. Premium. Distinctive.
And almost guaranteed to become one of the first configurations buyers ask distributors about if Apple makes it official.
For now, however, it remains a leak.
September 9 will give us the final answer.
Is Apple Finally Ready to Fold?
But even Dark Cherry may struggle to steal the spotlight from what could become Apple's biggest smartphone announcement in years.
The foldable iPhone.
After years of patents, prototypes, supplier reports and speculation, multiple sources now expect Apple's first folding smartphone to make an appearance at the September event.
Its final name remains uncertain.
For years, the technology world has casually called it the iPhone Fold. More recent speculation suggests Apple could position the device above the Pro Max and call it something closer to iPhone Ultra.
Whatever the branding, the concept appears to be a book-style or passport-style foldable smartphone: compact while closed and transforming into a larger tablet-like display when opened.
Reported display dimensions point toward an outer screen of approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches and an internal folding display around 7.6 to 7.8 inches.
Apple is also reportedly obsessed with solving the problem every foldable manufacturer knows too well:
the crease.
Rumours suggest Apple has pushed suppliers toward an extremely subtle folding crease, prioritising display quality even if doing so increases manufacturing complexity and cost.
That philosophy would make sense.
Apple is rarely first into a category.
But when Apple enters one, it normally wants consumers to believe the category has finally matured.
Touch ID Could Make an Unexpected Return
Perhaps one of the strangest rumours surrounding Apple's first foldable is the potential disappearance of Face ID.
Reports suggest the extremely thin folding chassis may not provide sufficient space for Apple's traditional TrueDepth facial-recognition hardware.
The solution?
An old friend could return.
Touch ID.
Instead of embedding the fingerprint reader underneath the display, reports suggest Apple could integrate Touch ID into the power button, similar to implementations Apple has already used on selected iPad models.
The foldable is also rumoured to feature two 48MP rear cameras covering wide and ultra-wide photography.
Again, nothing is confirmed until Apple says it is.
But if Apple really combines a foldable display, Touch ID, the latest Apple silicon and an entirely new form factor, this will not simply be another iPhone configuration.
It will represent a new category inside Apple's most important product family.
The Foldable Could Also Be Extremely Expensive
Innovation rarely enters the market cheaply.
Current estimates place the potential starting price of Apple's foldable somewhere around $2,000 to $2,300.
Based on typical UAE Apple pricing patterns, some forecasts place that in approximately the AED 8,500 to AED 9,800 territory.
That would make it comfortably one of Apple's most expensive consumer mobile devices.
And price may not be the only obstacle.
Availability could be.
Reports indicate Apple may initially produce the foldable in far smaller quantities than the mainstream Pro family. If global demand significantly exceeds initial manufacturing volumes, certain markets, storage variants or configurations could face delayed availability.
There have also been conflicting reports throughout development about engineering and production challenges surrounding Apple's folding device. Some sources believe it remains on track for 2026; others have previously raised the possibility of limited availability or delays extending toward 2027.
Until Apple officially announces shipment dates, therefore, the foldable should be treated as the biggest excitement—and the biggest availability question—of this year's launch.
Could iPhone 18 Prices Rise?
Possibly.
Pre-launch estimates also point toward higher pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro generation as Apple deals with increasing component and manufacturing costs.
One UAE projection places an iPhone 18 Pro starting price around AED 5,099, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max potentially beginning around AED 5,549 if the anticipated increase materialises.
These are forecasts, not official Apple prices.
Apple will have the final word on September 9.
But higher prices combined with constrained supply could create an interesting early-market environment.
The launch-day conversation may therefore move beyond:
"Which iPhone should I buy?"
toward:
"Which iPhone can I actually get first?"
September 12 Could Be the Next Important Date
Following Apple's September 9 announcement, current expectations point toward Saturday, September 12 for the opening of iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders.
The Pro models are then widely expected to reach customers and retail channels around Friday, September 18.
The foldable device could follow a different schedule depending on production readiness and regional allocation.
Those few days between announcement, pre-order and availability are where global demand becomes very real.
Colors start selling out.
Specific storage capacities disappear.
Regional models develop premiums.
Retailers begin competing for allocation.
Distributors start receiving urgent requests.
And suddenly everybody wants the same device at the same time.
That is exactly where supply-chain strength matters.
